Link Groups

A link group is a collection of related documents. You can create a link group from any document, add or remove documents in the group, import documents to that group, or make comments on documents in the group. You can also quickly access any of the documents in the group from any other document in the group, and you can search for documents with a particular link group comment.

For example, you might have a set of annual reports, with a new one created each year. The reports are stored in folders for their appropriate departments and years, but you want to be able to find all the reports quickly in order to review older data. By creating a link group and adding all of the reports to it, you can quickly find and open any annual report from any other annual report, without needing to navigate your folders or perform a search. You can also continue to add new annual reports every year.

Note: A document can only be a member of a single link group at a time. However, you can remove the document from one link group and then add it to another link group. Note that a document may have more than one document relationship at one time, or may both belong to a link group and may have one or more document relationship.

Link group numbers track the orders that documents are added to the link group. When you create a new link group, the document you used to create the link group will become link group member 1. As more documents are added to a link group, the link group number will increase by one for each new document, with the highest number being the latest member of the link group.

Important: The feature known as versions in Laserfiche 8.2 and prior is now known as link groups.  You will find your pre-Laserfiche 8.3 versions in the Link Groups section of the metadata dialog.
